In what sense is a Christian understanding of sexuality “good news”?
The Christian notion of sexuality is good news because of the implied theology behind it. God intentionally designed us as physical beings with the capacity of sexual reproduction, hence, we have an innate sexuality. It is my understanding that the character of God, along with what He desires, is subsequently revealed to us through its intended expression. In essence, sexuality acts as a communicative device. What do I mean by this?
Human sexuality, according to God's design, consists of love, faithfulness, desire, dignity, and passion, all of which reflect God's providential orientation towards us. He looks upon us as His children with an abundant and faithful love. The same spiritual qualities found in the beauty of human sexuality are conveyed to us as an illustration of God Himself. Moreover, the concept of marriage--the becoming of one flesh between one man and one woman--demonstrates the union between God and His people, Christ and His Church.
The good news of sexuality is precisely not in physical and spiritual pleasures (which can be good benefits); instead, the good news is to be found in the underlying theological revelation from God.
To what extent is it perceived as such within contemporary society?
The ultimate goal for secular society is to seek self-preservation and autonomy, whereas for Christians it is to glorify God. Admitting that sexuality is designed for a specific theological purpose would be to give up autonomous control over the meaning and practice of sexuality. The only good that society sees in the Christian sexuality is that it provides a great deal of pleasure; however, the Christian notion that pleasure cannot be the highest good is considered to be morally abhorrent.
