Why is Philosophy Important for Christians Today?

Philosophy may seem unnecessary or even contradictory to Scripture. Paul warns against ‘hollow and deceptive philosophy’ (Col 2:8). Historical theologians like Karl Barth have likewise had an impact on the Church’s attitude towards philosophy. The concern is that human reason might tower over the contents of Scripture, which is blasphemous. Whatever the reason may be, there does at least appear to be a common Christian inclination to dissociate from philosophical inquiry.

As I see it, this results from misunderstanding. First, Paul does not denounce the actual study of philosophy, but only a specific kind of ‘elemental’ philosophy that circulated the church at Colossae. In Acts 17-18 Paul debates and reasons with Jews and Greeks.

Second, it is easy to study philosophy without placing human reason over God’s Word. Philosophy is known as the study of the nature of reality. The Christian philosopher who studies reality can simply choose to ground his or her study in the Scriptures. Meaning, Christian philosophy can be practiced in conjunction with God’s Word. There is no contradiction in that!

Third, philosophy is not just about theories and models of the metaphysical universe. Instead, it involves critical thinking skills by way of conceptual analysis and logic. How do we interpret words? How can we analyze context? How can we relate one concept or idea to another?

These questions correspond to skills that can apply to the study of Scripture and how it is to be interpreted correctly. How do we relate the Old Testament to the New Testament and vice versa? What is the proper way to interpret Scripture? How do we apply the biblical contexts to our modern contexts? How do we know that God has given us His Word?

Far from the two being disconnected, it is by the grace of God that we are capable of studying philosophy; and the critical thinking skills presented in philosophy are essential in properly understanding Scripture. Therefore, all thinking Christians ought to embrace philosophy.
